Turn a Vague Freelance Request Into a Useful First Conversation

“Can you help with our content?” might be a good opportunity. It is also too broad to price confidently. Your first job is to understand the result the client wants.

Ask about the problem behind the task

Find out who will use the work, what currently is not working and what a useful result would change. Ask for an example they like and one they do not. You are collecting context, not promising to copy someone else’s work.

Name the delivery boundaries

Clarify the number of pieces, format, research required, review rounds and deadline. Ask who approves the result and whether that person will attend the kickoff. A deadline without a review process leaves an important part of the work undefined.

Reflect the request back

Send a short recap covering the outcome, deliverables, assumptions and unanswered questions. Use that to prepare a proposal. If the scope still is unclear, suggest a small defined discovery step rather than guessing the size of the whole project.
