Make a Plan for the Work Message That Arrives During Dinner

A notification can pull you back into work before you have decided whether it needs an answer. Make that decision easier by agreeing on expectations before the evening begins.

Find out what counts as urgent

Ask your manager which channel is used for true emergencies and what response is expected outside scheduled hours. If your role includes on-call work, clarify the rota and the handoff. Use the actual agreement rather than a guess about what everyone else does.

Choose an ordinary-message routine

If the work can wait under your team’s rules, capture it for the next work period. Keep personal downtime from becoming an unofficial second shift just because every message appears on the same device.

Make exceptions visible

If you do respond to an unexpected urgent request, record the handoff or follow-up the team needs. Repeated exceptions are worth discussing as a workload or coverage issue. A shared plan gives colleagues a clearer way to reach the right person.
