If an employer asks about your record, the goal is not to retell every detail. Give an honest answer, take responsibility where appropriate, and guide the conversation toward the person and worker you are today.
Keep the explanation focused
Briefly explain what happened without blaming other people or giving unnecessary details. Then describe the concrete steps you took afterward.
Show evidence of change
Training, steady work, counseling, volunteer service, completed programs, reliable references, and new responsibilities all help demonstrate progress.
Return to the job
Connect what you learned to the role: consistency, communication, patience, technical skills, or accountability. Practice the answer until it sounds natural rather than defensive.
