Technical Writing Jobs: Show How You Make a Task Easier

A technical writing portfolio can do more than demonstrate polished sentences. It can show that a reader is able to complete a task with fewer unanswered questions.

Choose a small, testable task

Write a guide for an allowed public tool or a project you can share. Define the reader and what they should achieve. Avoid publishing private employer information or presenting someone else’s documentation as your own.

Include the details a reader needs

List prerequisites, steps and the expected result. Explain one common failure and how to recognize it. Check the instructions yourself, then ask a willing reader to try them without additional coaching. Their questions show where the draft needs work.

Explain your decisions

Add a short portfolio note describing the audience, your role and what changed after testing. For a specific job, compare the employer’s subject-matter requirements with your background. A database documentation role may need technical depth beyond general writing skill.
