Work economy update

Hiring improved in August, but the market remains uneven. Remote job seekers should widen their target without lowering their standards.

The latest U.S. employment report gives job seekers a mixed but useful picture. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that payroll employment rose by 162,000 in August 2026 while unemployment held at 4.1%.

Where hiring moved

Food services and drinking places added 59,000 jobs, local government education added 42,000, and healthcare continued to trend upward. Information employment fell by 23,000, including declines in data processing, web hosting and publishing.

What this means for remote searches

Remote is a work arrangement, not an industry. When one sector slows, move your transferable skills toward another. Customer service, scheduling, claims, billing, enrollment and documentation appear across healthcare, education, insurance and financial services.

A practical response

  1. Search by task, not only by title.
  2. Create two résumé versions for different industries.
  3. Apply early and verify every opening on the employer’s official site.
  4. Use alerts, but still review location and licensing restrictions.

Average hourly earnings rose 3.1% over the year, but an economy-wide average does not guarantee individual buying power. Compare the full offer: pay, hours, benefits, equipment, commute requirements and stability.
