Career Compass / Salary Sense
A pay range is a starting point for questions, not the whole offer. Compare the duties, schedule, location rules, and compensation details before deciding whether a role fits.
Read the range carefully
Check whether the amount is hourly or annual, whether it is base pay or includes incentives, and whether it varies by location or experience. Ask how many hours are expected and whether the position is temporary, contract, part-time, or full-time. Do not assume the highest advertised amount is the likely starting offer.
Research the work, not just the title
Compare similar responsibilities and experience levels. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook provides occupation profiles and median pay. Its Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program also provides geographic wage estimates. Check the reference year and location. A median describes a distribution; it is not a guaranteed offer or an entry-level rate.
Make a side-by-side offer checklist
- Base pay and the hours it covers
- Any bonus or commission terms, including what is guaranteed and what is conditional
- Schedule, training attendance, and expected availability
- Benefits eligibility and the information needed to compare employee costs
- Equipment provided, required purchases, and reimbursement rules
- Contract length, work location restrictions, and the review process
Request missing terms in writing. Do not treat an informal recruiter estimate as the final offer.
Ask a clear pay question
Could you confirm the base-pay range budgeted for this position, how placement within that range is determined, and whether any listed incentives are separate from base pay?
Prepare for a compensation conversation
Write down the responsibilities you can meet and examples that support your request. State a specific question or request, then listen. If base pay cannot change, ask which other terms are open for discussion rather than assuming everything is negotiable.
Before accepting
Read the complete written offer, clarify unclear terms, and take the agreed review time. This page is a job-offer comparison guide, not individualized tax, legal, or financial advice.
