If you’ve been updating your résumé, sending applications, and checking your inbox for a callback, that September jobs headline probably hit a nerve.
The September 2026 report showed U.S. payroll employment growing by 29,000 jobs, with unemployment at 4.2%. Those are national figures; the report doesn’t tell us how many work-from-home positions are available. But it gives job seekers a reason to think carefully about their next move. BLS report
At StayHomeHire, we want people to see the value in the skills they already have—and put those skills to work in more than one way.
A work-from-home job may be your next step. Building a small business may be another. You can explore both while figuring out what fits your life.
Start with your WFH search. Search by the work you can do: customer support, scheduling, recruiting, technical support, or administrative assistance. Read the location requirements, hours, and qualifications before applying. A remote position can still require you to live in a particular state.
Then give your application some attention. Explain what you’ve actually accomplished. Handling difficult customers, keeping accurate records, training coworkers, and solving problems are experiences worth describing clearly.
This is where ChatGPT can become a useful assistant in your corner.
Give it your résumé and the official job description. Ask it to compare the requirements with your experience, improve unclear wording, prepare interview questions, and organize your applications. Review every claim before using it. OpenAI’s job application guide
Try a prompt like this:
“Compare my résumé with this job description. Show which requirements I meet, where I have gaps, and how to explain my relevant experience clearly. Don’t invent qualifications. Then help me practice five interview questions.”
Now consider another possibility: some of those same skills could become a service you offer directly.
If you’re organized, you could help a small business manage appointments and customer follow-ups. If you write well, you could offer editing or newsletter support. If you understand a particular subject, you could explore tutoring.
Becoming your own boss can begin with one useful service, one clear customer, and one paid project.
For example, “I help local service businesses organize customer inquiries and confirm appointments” gives someone a clear reason to hire you.
ChatGPT can help you develop that offer, draft an introduction, prepare customer intake questions, and create a checklist for delivering the work. It can also help draft promotional posts and customer emails from the information you provide. OpenAI’s idea-to-result guide, campaign guide
Here’s another starting prompt:
“I have experience in [your skill] and can spend [hours] per week testing a service business. Help me define one service I can deliver well, identify a likely customer, and draft a clear offer. Flag assumptions I need to check.”
Think of ChatGPT as a trusted assistant whose work you review. Check facts, protect private information, and make sure you can deliver what you promise.
You can keep applying for WFH jobs while testing a small service. Track the time, costs, customer feedback, and money earned so your next decision rests on real experience.
This week, improve one application. Define one service. Create one sample that shows what you can do.
Your next opportunity might come from an employer—or from a customer who needs your skills. Give yourself room to find both.
Are you working toward a WFH job, becoming your own boss, or a little of both?
