Career Compass / Career Boost

If your search feels scattered, start with one target role and one skill gap. A smaller plan is easier to carry through than trying to qualify for every opening at once.

Translate what you already do

Write down three tasks you have handled reliably. For each, name the skill behind it and the evidence. Scheduling can demonstrate coordination; resolving billing questions can demonstrate research and clear communication. Do not change your job title to imply experience you did not have.

A four-week skill plan

  1. Week one: Compare three relevant job descriptions. Pick one repeated skill you need to strengthen.
  2. Week two: Practice with a small, realistic task, such as cleaning a sample spreadsheet or writing a customer response.
  3. Week three: Ask someone to review the work. Correct errors and record what changed.
  4. Week four: Save a nonconfidential sample and write a short explanation of your process. Use it only when an application allows supporting work.

Practice projects should be labeled as projects, not paid employment. Use invented sample data rather than a past employer’s customer information.

Protect your energy during a job search

Set a realistic application window and an end time. Separate tasks into finding suitable roles, tailoring applications, and following up. Track actions you control instead of treating every employer response as a verdict on your ability.

  • Keep one tracker with the role, employer, date, link, next step, and outcome.
  • Check messages at planned times instead of refreshing all day.
  • Review patterns weekly: Are the roles suitable? Are your examples clear? Are location or schedule requirements eliminating matches?
  • Make room for breaks and ordinary life. Ask a trusted person for practical support when the process feels heavy.

Choose tomorrow’s next move

One well-matched application, one practice task, or one useful conversation is a concrete next step. Pick it before you finish today.
