Career Compass / Interview Insider

A strong interview is a useful conversation about how you would do the work. Prepare evidence, not a performance. Use this guide before a recruiter screen, video call, or final interview.

Build a five-story answer bank

Choose real examples of solving a problem, handling a difficult conversation, learning something, meeting a deadline, and correcting a mistake. For each, write four short notes: the situation, your responsibility, what you did, and what happened. Be clear about your contribution when a team was involved.

Try this question

“Tell me about a time you handled a frustrated customer.” Explain what the person needed, how you clarified the problem, which action you took, and what you learned. If you do not have paid customer-service experience, an honest volunteering or school example can still show the relevant skill.

Get your remote interview setup ready

  1. Confirm the date, time zone, interview platform, and interviewer’s name.
  2. Test your microphone, camera, headphones, and connection using the same device you plan to use.
  3. Place the camera near eye level. Check lighting and remove private information from the background and shared desktop.
  4. Close notifications and unnecessary tabs. Keep the job description, a few notes, and water nearby.
  5. Have a backup contact method. If the call disconnects, message the recruiter briefly rather than repeatedly joining different links.

Questions worth asking

  • What would a successful first 90 days look like?
  • How does the team communicate and receive feedback remotely?
  • What hours, location restrictions, and training attendance does this role require?
  • What is the next step, and when should I expect an update?

Follow up without chasing

Send a short thank-you that references something specific from the conversation. If the stated timeline passes, send one polite status check. Keep applying elsewhere while you wait.
